Visit from Upendo Village

CTC HIV/AIDS Program was excited to host our partners from Upendo Village in support of our new project, Grandparents against Poverty and HIV/AIDS (GAPA). 20 grandparents attended their visit at our Youth Centre, on the 20th of September, 2011.

Upendo Village is a Catholic founded Community-based Organization under Assumptions Sisters of Nairobi (ASN).The organization has been partnering with CTC's Health Program through medical interventions and nutritional support for people living with HIV and education through sponsorships for orphans and other community members in need.

CTC HIV/AIDS Program has identified interventions to counter some of the struggles and health problems surrounding this population by partnering with like minded organizations like the Upendo Village.

Under conditions of meager economic power, grandparents bear the burden of not only taking care of themselves but also handling psychosocial issues among children from dysfunctional families due to single motherhood, HIV/AIDS, drugs and alcohol consumption. The grandparents deserve to smile again, their longevity is important and should not be reduced due to malnutrition or psychological and economic burdens.

Our partner Upendo Village extended their support through providing the groups with food supplements which included porridge flour, maize flour and beans. They also offered to support the groups further by providing soft loans with no interest, linkages to surgery interventions, sponsorships of grandchildren, shelter improvement and also to donate items like clothes and stationary.

CTC HIV/AIDS Program would like to thank Upendo Village and welcome on board many stakeholders to support our initiatives in uplifting the lives of these deprived communities.

Thank you,

Charles Wachira, HIV/AIDS Program Director
