Goal
Many of you have known about my longtime interest in global health and development. After moving to Austin several years ago, I have continuously looked for a way to become involved in this type of work. I first learned about CTC (Comfort the Children) International earlier this year from a close friend. After several rounds of emails with their leadership team, the organization (which is based in Austin) piqued my interest. Just browse through the CTC website and you will see what incredible work they are doing in Africa.
So you can imagine my surprise when I was in church several weeks ago and learned that the Episcopal Student Center in Austin was partnering with CTC on a trip to Africa at the end of the year to provide community assistance. I immediately contacted the leader of the trip, and after a fantastic discussion over lunch, I knew this was a opportunity I had to take.
CTC has five aims: education, environment, economy, health and community. While in Africa, I will be involved in all these areas, but most exciting to me, is the opportunity to learn more (and assist) CTC's work to reduce HIV/AIDS and improve health care. The trip is just around the corner (Dec 30 - Jan 10). I am asking for your prayers (or a spiritual dance -- whichever you choose) as our team of eleven embarks on this amazing experience. If you feel inclined to financially support the trip (and offset some of my costs), any contribution is GREATLY appreciated and the donation is tax deductible. There are four college students in our group, and I have decided to shift some of the money I raise to offset their costs too. I have very generous friends and family members, so this is a way for me to "share the love."
As we move towards the holidays, when it is easy to become distracted by material things and excess, this is a great way for you to support an initiative that is helping those who have so little build a better life for themselves and their families.
