Goal

I first traveled to Africa as a high school freshman with a passion for photography. Alongside teachers and other students, I embarked on a three-week expedition through Tanzania, beginning in a small village named Maji ya Chai and ending on safari in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area just west of the Serengeti. What I thought would just be a fun opportunity to take pictures of some lions ended up transforming my perspective on the world and my place in it. Armed with a very limited knowledge of the Swahili language, I met so many amazing people and formed friendships that maintained a place in my heart up until this very day.

I will always remember one young girl in particular; her name was Hagape, and she lived in an orphanage in the same complex we were staying in. She was too young to have experienced as many hardships in life as she had, but somehow she possessed seemingly endless joy and excitement. Her love for life against all odds inspired me to return to Africa someday to try to make a real difference for children like Hagape. This trip awoke in me a desire to volunteer and serve in a community that I had never realized before.

Finally, over five years later, I have found the answer to my calling. CTC International presents an opportunity for me to return to Africa--this time to Kenya--as a part of a greater project supporting and becoming a part of the community of Maai Mahiu. My trip will focus on building relationships and transforming communities through our faith. To do this, we will work in classrooms, gardens and clinics, both as opportunities to serve the people of Maai Mahiu and to learn how to improve communities so that we may take those skills back home with us. I am more than incredibly excited to serve with CTC and to be given the chance to experience just how I can utilize my spiritual gifts in the service of others.

I depart for Kenya alongside the rest of my Community & Faith Team from Austin this winter, on January 3. What would really help me on my journey of preparation and during my trip is financial support. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, but paying for the airfare, room and board will cost $4000. Any form of financial support, from $5 to $500, gets me one step closer to being able to travel to Kenya this winter break. And as an added bonus--any and all funds you donate to CTC to support my trip are tax deductible! Directions on how to make a donation are provided below. Thank you for your help and support!
