The Acacia Fund

The Acacia Fund was founded by a committed group of CTC supporters with the goal of fully financing CTC’s annual budget for the Malaika Kids program. Currently, this budget funds the education of 22 children with a variety of developmental needs, educational and physical therapy resources for all three classrooms, 10 children seen for outpatient therapy and the salaries of our Occupational Therapist and five caretakers.

Used as a representation of endurance and purity, the Acacia tree is the quintessential 'tree of life'.  Dr. Tim Williamson, Acacia Fund Founder & CTC Board Member, explains:

“The Acacia Tree serves as a symbol of strength, growth and shelter in Kenya. Our hope for the Acacia Fund is that it provides the financial and professional support for this extraordinary program to remain strong, grow its level of impact and ensure that special needs children in Maai Mahiu will always have a place to go to receive the attention they need.”

Beyond fulfilling the funding needs of the program in its current state, Acacia supporters seek to grow the program in its ability to serve special needs children both in Malaika Kids and those in surrounding communities unable to participate in the program.

Long-term goals include:
  • Increase the capacity of Malaika Kids to enroll more children (there is currently a waiting list of over 80 children)
  • Hire a full-time Special Needs Education teacher (completed March 2013)
  • Purchase handicap accessible vehicles for transporting students
  • Expand our educational outreach and home-based care programs
  • Build the new Malaika Kids facility on CTC’s land

The Acacia Fund is supported by a growing group of sustaining donors and an annual fundraiser in Kansas City. In 2015, The Acacia Fundraiser will be held in Kansas City, at The College Basketball Experience on October 17th. This event has continued to be a huge success and is directly responsible for CTC's abiltiy to hire new staff and advance the care of our Malaika Kids!
