Goal
I both learned about and fell in love with their mission when Charles, the CTC assistant director, was invited to speak with us at the Sudent Center one evening in the fall. He spoke of his experiences growing up in Kenya, volunteering and working with CTC, and why they stand out from other non-profit organizations. Holistic development, sustainable solutions, transparency, collaborative relationships, and cultural relevance are a few of the values he shared that resonated deeply with me.
So, on January 3 I will leave Austin-Bergstram airport in route to Maai Mahiu in Kenya! We will use the first day for travel only, eventually spending the night in Nairobi. Once we arrive, we will spend another day orienting ourselves to the Maai Mahiu way of life. We will visit volunteers' homes and have the chance to see several of the CTC projects in action. For the next week we will work in he community, using each day to serve the CTC initiatives around town that need our time and labour most. Finally, we will have a rest day to shop at the local market and look around, then go on a team safari. After saying goodbye to the CTC team, we will then travel back to Austin.
I don't think I can describe how excited I am to make this journey. I feel there is no better way to explore the world than to spend time working with and for the community I am traveling to. I want to make sure I keep all my close friends updated on my trip plans, and feel free to give me a call if you are interested in chatting about the trip.
