70% of Maai Mahui's population is infected with HIV/AIDS. Medical work educating and bringing resources to stem the rising infection rate is sorely needed. Current medical care for the community is limited to one public health facility and one public health officer, restricting phycisian availability to only a few hours per week. The Maasai, located in remote areas, do not even have the limited resources found in Maai Mahiu. Medical teams sponsored by CTC International evaluate hundreds of patients each trip, for many locals this is their first encounter with a physician. AIDS/HIV, syphilis, TB, malaria, and parasitic infections are common. Small coal burning stoves to heat homes and generate smoke to keep out flying insects is the source of frequent upper respiratory tract infections; chronic otitis media, chronic bronchitis, chronic sinusitis, and conjunctivitis. Prenatal and obstetrical care is practically non-existent giving rise to high infant mortality rates. With all the medical problems the people face, the efforts of CTC International bring one incredible gift... the gift of hope.

The current efforts and those being planned are:

ONE
Supply antiretrovirals to HIV positive mothers so they can continue to work and provide for their children.

TWO
HIV/AIDS support groups formed by patients and their families.

THREE
Partner with voluntary counseling and treatment (VCT) programs in Kenya.

FOUR
Send medical teams from the U.S. to Maai Mahiu and to the Maasai.

FIVE
Develop a community center for patient education and medical treatment.

SIX
Facilitate construction of a road to the nearest medical center to make health care more accessible.

SEVEN
Work to get antiretrovirals and other essential medications for reduced cost.

EIGHT
Provide reading glasses to the older population.

NINE
Work on sanitation problems and water quality issues.

TEN
Send dentists and hygienists from the U.S. to provide dental care.
