CTC Health program had a very exciting week as we implemented part of the Grandparents against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA) program. On the 15th of December 2011, the program held a day of community based counseling and testing for the target population in Olororopi, a Maasai occupied region.
The event attracted key gate keepers like pastors, through a community based organization called the Maanaratoi Self Help Group. The pastors are very influential figures in the Maasai community and they assisted us greatly with community sensitization. They worked hand in hand with our community health workers that have been diligently and proactively supporting the Maasai in Olororopi.
We were able to tackle topics such as HIV/AIDS sensitization, health education, human rights advocacy and also had the opportunity to offer Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services at the same time. We count the day as a great success having counseled and tested 86 grandmothers and orphans.
It is just the beginning of great things for the program and the start of a life transforming process for grandparents who have been left with orphans and vulnerable children to take care of. The program’s goal is to have an empowered population of grandparents, orphans and vulnerable children in all aspects of life. We are closing the year humbled to serve this wonderful population.
Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you all,
Belinda Atieno, Assistant Health Program Officer
