UBUNTU DAYS
Ubuntu Days come from our understanding that we are a global community bound and interdependent on one another. In trying to decide how to properly combat the overwhelming environmental and sanitation issues in Maai Mahiu, we came up with Ubuntu Days as our solution. Every third Saturday of the month, CTC hosts Ubuntu Day which is essentially a community wide “clean your town up” day and an opportunity for the community of Maai Mahiu to work together to improve their living conditions. We partner with the local schools, churches, NGO’s and the local government - recycling, throwing away trash and planting trees to beautify our community.
COMMUNITY CENTER
So many needs in developing countries exist because of the lack of infrastructure. CTC’s vision for a community center is to provide local residents with opportunity, but also a physical structure that inspires them to see beyond poverty and into the fullness of their potential. Through a partnership with Zahner, Ecole SpeĢciale d’Architecture and the University of Nairobi, our plan is to design a progressively Kenyan community center that is culturally relevant, but also moves the community forward in terms of vision, resources and the use of renewable energy. The idea is that by its very structure and resources provided within the center will empower the people and provide opportunity for the communities future.
YOUTH SOCCER CLUB
After realizing the lack of activities for our young residents, CTC saw the opportunity to start a youth soccer program. We have recruited over one hundred students and continue to grow. Participants gather together each evening, improving their talents, learning life skills and supporting one another to reach their fullest potential. These nightly practices give the players the opportunity to discuss the grueling issues facing the community.
