RAFIKI LINK

Rafiki (Friend) Link builds authentic global connection and understanding by directly linking schools around the world with primary and secondary schools in Maai Mahiu. Youth engage in meaningful, curriculum-based interactions such as essay contests, art exchanges, and a video talent show. As a result of Rafiki Link, hundreds of students in Kenya have learned to use a computer, email, and collaborate with fellow students around the world. For the latest updates or to learn how your school can join, see www.rafikilink.blogspot.com.

MAAI MAHIU POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL

In July 2003, nine individuals traveled from the United States to Maai Mahiu to construct a classroom at an orphanage that was home to 140 children. That summer CTC built two classrooms to be used for computer training and tailoring courses. Today the school has six classrooms with over 120 students being educated in courses such as tailoring, carpentry, leather works, cosmetology, computer skills and knitting. We run the school in partnership with the Africa Inland Children’s Home and it has grown tremendously. In July 2008 the school received the award for most improved polytechnic school in Kenya.

MALAIKA KIDS

“Disability does not mean inability!” This is the saying that one often hears when you spend time at CTC’s Malaika Kids, our school for children with special needs. To be disabled either mentally or physically in Kenya typically means living a life of exclusion and shame. Many in the Kenyan culture believe that it is a curse to be disabled. At Malaika Kids we recognize that these children are lights to the community and over the past few years since the program's beginning these children have learned to walk, to write and simply to live in a positive healthy environment with other children.
