- STORIES FROM MAAI MAHIU, KENYA -
Education has always been my life master and books have been my closest friend. When I finished my fourth form, my dad was skeptical about me entering college due to the past experience with my elder sisters. I tried as hard as I could to make sure that I enrolled myself in a college. I first joined Kenya Medical Training Center for a diploma in pharmacy. I dropped out of school in the third semester of my first due to school fees. I had no one to support me since my aunt had supported me for the previous two semesters. I started to look for any job, which would help me raise some money for school fees. I happened to get a job as a school nurse in a certain school in my village, earning 2000 KSH per month. Since I was staying with my parents, I could save every single coin that I earned. I also worked as a computer tutor to earn extra money. After working for six months, I came into conflict with my boss. I encountered a personal problem and was terminated then and there. The little money I had saved, helped me join another college which was cheaper than the previous one I had attended, allowing me study part time as I worked for the cost of school fees and living.
I joined Kenya School of Management for Human Resource Management and started on a new direction started. I swore never to involve anyone in my struggles until I see myself somewhere someday. I struggled with the tuitions, and doing any job in order to sustain myself. I worked in one of the horticultural companies at the Airport, first as a cleaner. Funny enough, I needed training on how to hold a broom and a dust pan since I had never used them before. Fortunately, after three months, the CTC management needed an assistant in the Human Resource office and no one had the qualification apart from me. I got the new position as a Human Resource Office Assistant and Archivist. My life started taking shape as I worked and studied. I started becoming tougher and learned how to survive in this demanding life. I didn't care about previous downfalls because I was determined and worthy. No matter what comes my way, I must achieve my goal. Failure is not part of my life and positive mind is all I thought of. I often find myself in a winning mood knowing I can run the race.
My journey to success has been long and surrounded by uncertainties. I never thought that I would have come to this stage of life but the grace of God and all the support and love I have received from my family and CTC team, has proved to be my daily strength. The path has been so dark that I could not see any twinkle of light ahead. Thanks to my husband and Charles who has greatly encouraged me saying "No matter how dark the night may be, there will be a morning.” It has dawned on me and I am so grateful for how far I have come. There has not been a lucky moment without struggle and hard work. All of my family and friends were joined me in celebrating my winning spirit and my zest for life, revived.
