Trash Collection Day

- STORIES FROM MAAI MAHIU, KENYA -

Every Friday morning, some youth in Maai Mahiu participate in collecting trash from residential areas. Under the leadership of CTC’s own Bernard Owino, the community Waste Management project has been able to successfully launch. Run by CTC youth, an integrated and sustainable waste management system has been created in Maai Mahiu, allowing for better sanitation within households and throughout the town.

Pictured are trash bags being collected from various residential areas. A truck also goes around Maai Mahiu collecting the trash to take to the dumping site.

Last Friday, Tribe team members Jim, Judy and Damon joined CTC youth. It was so amazing. Bernard and Damon were in charge of gathering the trash from each residence while Jim and Judy were in charge of controlling the already cleaned areas.

So far, we have recruited 71 clients who pay 200 Kenyan shillings per month for the service. This money then goes towards salary for the youths as well as the transportation of garbage to the dumping site.
