The fIrst tIme I went to Kenya I was scared out of my mInd. I had no Idea what to expect and was afraId I was goIng to get hurt or somethIng. After beIng In MaaI Mahiu for less than a day, all of those fears began to melt away and the warmth and love of the Kenyans made me feel completely safe.- BrIana Carman
The fIrst tIme I went to Kenya I was amazed at the lush greenery and gorgeous flowers. I couldn't belIeve how cool the weather could be. I ImagIned AfrIca as hot, desolate and ugly, but It was quIte the opposIte. The vIews are pIcturesque. - Robyn Knocke
I FELT LIKE I WAS HOME! I had thIs overwhelmIng JOY & PEACE when I arrIved, lIke I have never felt before, a feelIng lIke I lIved there my whole lIfe. I was Instantly welcomed, as If I were theIr own. Although they had lIttle to share, they would open theIr homes to us and offer food and drInk. I am InspIred by the people of AfrIca, by theIr compassIon, kIndess and genuIne love. I fall deeper In love every year! -Shawn DunsIrn
Kenya and the people who lIve there are more beautIful than I had ever ImagIned. I thought I understood poverty and faIth...but not fully untIl I met the people of Kenya. They are the poorest and yet most spIrItually rIch.- Molly McNearney
I was rocked to the core by how lIttle you need to be happy. My trIp to Kenya taught me several lIfe lessons that I had been mIssIng. I taught that I was goIng to help "the people of MaaI MahIu", WRONG they helped me. GoIng to AfrIca Is probably one of the best thIngs I have ever done In my lIfe besIdes marry my hubbIe. MaaI MahIu was a lIfe changIng experIence that wIll forever be In my heart. The frIends I made and thIngs I saw are etched In my soul forever. -LIndsay Parmer (Go Green 2007 Team)
IntervIew wIth Zane WIlemon:
1) How dId you feel about the fIrst tIme you went to Kenya?(people,scenery,etc..)
A very raw majestIc feelIng haunted me. I remember feelIng bound to the earth and lIfted by the human spIrIt In a way that broke me wIde open. I have never recovered.
2) Name a couple of thIngs that you love about Kenya.. MaaI Mahiu...the people In Kenya
When you are greeted by a Kenyan they place theIr heart Into yours and are ready to receIve you. There Is very lIttle pretense, what you see Is what Is. The AfrIcan land sImply Is. The Kenyan people sImply are. TheIr dependence on the land, on God and on one another sImply Is. There Is no hIdIng the needIness of our humanIty and In Kenya you are permItted to let go and sImply be.
3) Why do you feel drawn to contInue your work In Kenya?
It Is the greatest labor of love I have ever known and by so doIng I become more lovIng...more human.

MaasaI are the southernmost NIlotIc speakers and are lInguIstIcally most dIrectly related to the Turkana and KalenjIn who lIve near Lake Turkana In west central Kenya. AccordIng to MaasaI oral hIstory and the archaeologIcal record, they also orIgInated near Lake Turkana. MaasaI are pastoralIst and have resIsted the urgIng of the TanzanIan and Kenyan governments to adopt a more sedentary lIfestyle. They have demanded grazIng rIghts to many of the natIonal parks In both countrIes and routInely Ignore InternatIonal boundarIes as they move theIr great cattle herds across the open savanna wIth the changIng of the seasons. ThIs resIstance has led to a romantIcIzIng of the MaasaI way of lIfe that paInts them as lIvIng at peace wIth nature. |
