Beginning in the summer of 2007, Comfort The Children International worked
directly with The Green Belt Movement (GBM) on our first project to empower Kenyan communities by teaching about the importance of planting trees. Over 200 local volunteers joined with the CTC- Go Green team and side by side they planted over 3,000 trees that are indigenous to the area.

Continuing in 2008 CTC will have two large efforts to plant more trees. Starting in March, Graham Carter will lead a team of volunteers into Kenya. They will be planting 6,000 trees with an initiative of planting before Kenya's first long rainy season. In June, Mindy Stallings will be leading a team into Kenya as well and while the team will be considered a "Camp" of sorts there will be an entire week dedicated to planting trees.

What is The Green Belt Movement?

GBM Kenya is a non-profit grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Kenya.
GBM provides income and sustenance to millions of people in Kenya through the planting of trees. Wangari Maathai is the founder of the Green Belt Movement, an environmentalist, a civil society and women's rights activist, and a parliamentarian. You can read about her life and her organization through her two books, Unbowed: A Memoir and The Green Belt Movement.  Her achievements include being awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. The GBM worked directly with Comfort the Children in the summer of 2007.
